Youth for governance: empowering tomorrow's leaders.

This project seeks to address the issue of lack of youth participation in governance in the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly. Through mobilisation, empowerment of over 5000 male and female youth, it will provide opportunities for their voices to be heard in decision-making.
It is anticipated this intervention will contribute to good governance and enable a development process that is more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the youth who are the majority.

Project Goals

The primary goal of the “Youth for Governance” initiative is to actively engage and empower young people in the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly to participate in local governance processes. By fostering youth involvement, this project seeks to create a more inclusive and representative municipal assembly that addresses the needs and aspirations of the entire community.

Specific Objectives

Enhance Civic Education: Provide comprehensive civic education and awareness programs to
equip young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in local governance effectively.

Youth Representation: Encourage and support youth representation within the municipal assembly by advocating for the inclusion of youth councillors and advisory roles for youth in decision-making bodies.

Stakeholder Participation: Facilitate forums, consultations, and dialogues between youth and municipal leaders to ensure youth voices are heard in the formulation and implementation of policies and projects.

Capacity Building: Offer training and mentorship opportunities to empower youth leaders with the tools they need to participate actively in local governance, including leadership development and project management skills.

Community Development Projects: Collaborate with youth groups to identify and implement community development projects that address the specific needs of the New Juaben South Municipality. Monitoring and Evaluation: Establish mechanisms for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of youth participation in governance, ensuring accountability and transparency in the process.

Target Beneficiaries

  1. Youth: The primary beneficiaries of this initiative are young people in the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, aged between 18 and 35, who will gain valuable skills, opportunities for leadership, and a platform to influence local decision-making.
  2. Local Government: The project aims to strengthen the municipal assembly by infusing it with fresh perspectives and energy from youth engagement, ultimately improving its effectiveness in serving the entire community.
  3. Community: All communities in the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly will benefit from a more inclusive and responsive local governance system that considers their diverse needs and concerns.

Key Stakeholder/Allies 

  • National Commission for Civic Education Staff.
  • National Youth Authority (NYA).
  • New Juaben south Municipal assembly.
  • Opinion leaders in the four key communities in Koforidua.
  • Civil Society Organizations and Youth groups and CSOs e.g., Youth Parliament, AFES-Ghana etc.
  • National Road Safety Commission.
  • Local Businesses – We will reach out to at 10 prominent local businesspeople to use their influence to lobby the municipal assembly to prioritize the youth and engage them in decision making. 
  • Management of Educational Institutions – to encourage them to support the project’s objectives to advocating for the youth.
  • Media houses: Bryt FM, Afeema FM and Sunrise FM to support to the project and use their medium to advocate for youth participation and leadership.
  • Parents, caregivers and families of youth and Persons with Disability to encourage them to support their participation in the project.

Expected Outcome

  1. By 2026, 5000 of young men and women who are currently excluded from decision-making spaces will engage in the political process, to help improve inclusiveness and foster a sense of ownership and responsibility in shaping the future of their city.
  2. By 2026, there will be a 20% increase in voices, representation of youth issues within the decision-making structures of the Municipal assembly, here-the concerns, needs, and perspectives of young people are considered in policymaking.
  3. By 2026 at least 70 youth from 10 Youth Advisory Councils will be equipped with leadership skills and empowered to engage in governance processes to help improve youth inclusiveness in the development plans of the Municipality
